Google Tech Talk May 27, 2009 ABSTRACT Presented by Vic Nalwa. Panoramic and spherical-view cameras today are by and large one of three types: 1. A single camera with wide-angle optics, such as a fisheye lens or curved mirror; 2. Multiple cameras looking out directly in different directions; or 3. Multiple cameras looking out off flat mirrors, which is FullViews patented approach. Whereas multiple cameras offer much higher resolution than any single camera, multiple cameras looking out directly are in general incapable of producing seamless, artifact-free and blur-free composite images no matter what, because of parallax. FullView evades parallax through its patented approach in which multiple cameras look out off flat mirrors such that all the cameras are effectively looking out in different directions but from the same single viewpoint. The kit is great, it has all the items promised, and arrived with good packing.
The Samsonite bag:- Very good, very sturdy, waterproof and it is heavily padded on all sides for protection. It has the option of multichambering and customising the middle big chamber. has two side and one front pocket, all chained.
Lens CLeaning System:- is good. But how long will it last? The screen covers are useful.
2.2x Wide angle:- With my equivalent 38-380mm lens it gives me an effective 27-270mm, which was very essential for Panoromic and Wide Angle Photography. The lens system fits tightly with the adapter. It comes with rubber covers and in a small cute leather pouch.
Macro:- A part of the Wide angle lens seperates out to form the solo Macro lens and gives around a 1.8x times magnification (1.7cm from 3cm). My C-765 already had a great macro mode. It enhances it further with almost no extra barrel distortion.
2.2x Telephoto lens:- This transforms my 38-380 lens of Olympus C-765 to 56.3-563mm lens. This fits tightly too . The autofocus of camera works fine with this. However when I used this lens there was a marked fall of image contrast and depth. The image is sharp in the center but the image was blurred out at the corners. Also the camera becomes very very bulky, you surely donot want to keep this attached unless you are really doing some serious wild-life type photography. It is necessary to support my C-765 camera firmly when using this because there is no anti-shake feature. This lens comes in a small leather pouch as well. I find it a little inconvinient to use.
The 4ft stand: Great stand for the price, and they give you a jacket too (not waterproof). It is very lightweight and is fine for ligtweight cameras like C-765. If you are thinking of using this same stand for heavier SLRs, think again!
The 3"stand: It is almost useless! It cannot support the weight of my C-765 and is unstable.
The UV, Polaroid and Flourescent filters: The Polaroid filter is very useful for me since I got it. I didnot need to use the Flourescent filter because Manual White-Balance of my camera does a better job. All these lenses come in a small sturdy pouch easy to carry places in your pocket.
Problems:- 1) You cannot use the camera lens-cap with the UV or Polaroid filter on. So you cannot probably keep the filters on continiously as suggested in the Opteka advt feature.
2) There is a considerable fish-eye distortion when I used the UV and Polaroid lens. They are plane lenses instead of the more distortion reducing Concav0-convex type. The horizons are never straight, and I have to use a softwere to correct all my pics eventually.
3) The Chromatic abberation becomes very visible at times when I use the Wide-angle ot Telephoto attachment. There is also a marked loss of contrast and depth in the picture and increased barrel distortion. (More the number of lens, lesser will be the picture crispiness)
4) The Wide angle and more so the Telephoto lens make the camera bulky, and it doesnot fit into my waistpouch with them on.
supremely tiny but beautiful, glassy evening surf in Maine serves as the testing ground of new toy/artistic device... an Olympus SW1030 10.1 megapixel waterproof digital camera... basically right out of the box operation, wicked easy to operate... i paddled and stood up while holding the little gem in my hand! it has a wonderfully wide angle lens, which is a fine bonus... VGA @30fps... currently crafting board mount and body mount camera bases to capture more perspectives... true geek nirvana... the song is oh so appropriately stolen from Thievery Corporation... but it popped out of the library as i was capturing the video to my Sony Vegas Movie Studio editing software, and was perfect in translating my feelings for the ocean, a house of love forever... forgiving and challenging, like a good teacher, which of course it is... the best perhaps... anyhow, very little was done effects wise to the footage, a lot of slowing down for sure, a touch of hue/saturation boost here and there... but it's pretty much 95 percent the way it came out of the camera... a breeze to use, lots of potential uses and it won't break the bank... got mine for $339@Newegg... and you'll never worry about taking it with you, anywhere!!! freezeproof crushproof shockproof and obviously, waterproof... and no, i don't work for Olympus... but i definitely recommend this camera to any outdoor freaks and geeks... remember, it's fun to share... thanks
The EF 28mm f/1.8 USM is an odd animal, with users either loving or hating its optical characteristics. Physically, there's nothing to complain about. The lens is solidly constructed, the focusing travel is contained within the barrel, it uses the USM system with full-time manual focus, and the filter ring is the popular 58mm style. All of these features nicely differentiate it from the EF 28mm f/2.8, which is comparatively compromised in all of these areas (but is probably a better value for the money, oddly).
The first sign of trouble may be the integrated rectangular shield inside the front element assembly. While this probably helps reduce flaring and artifacts, neither of its close relatives -- the EF 28mm f/2.8 or the EF 20mm f/2.8 USM -- require such a feature. Disagreeable vignetting can occur, even on a crop body and with moderately bright indoor light, when stopped open. Light bloom is also excessive when wide open, and some users have reported chromatic aberration, although I haven't personally seen it. Conversely, performance is excellent in very low light and outdoor night shots with long exposure times.
I consider this essential glass for flashless photography under low-light conditions, particularly indoors in close quarters, as the wide angle and wide aperture will effectively gather all of the light and people in a room. Combined with a high ISO setting in the 800+ range, sharp images can be taken at reasonably quick shutter speeds, then subjected to noise cleanup during post-processing. However I don't use the lens as much outdoors during daytime, or indoors in brightly-lit areas. The EF 20mm f/2.8 USM handles these situations far better and is a good complement for the EF 28mm f/1.8 USM.
Summarily, the main issues with this lens is price. For about 5, everyone should get one. But for the 0+ range where this lens usually sells, it is overpriced relative to what it offers. Hopefully Canon will develop a Mark II version of this lens that improves on the optical characteristics while retaining the physical features and build quality.
